In a note, the GNR said that the campaign will have awareness-raising actions and also inspection by the GNR and the PSP "with a special focus on roads with high road traffic", with the aim of "contributing to the reduction of the risk of occurrence of accidents and for the adoption of safer behaviour by drivers” regarding mobile phone use while driving.
On Monday, an awareness-raising and inspection action is scheduled at IC 2, next to Boa Vista, in Leiria, from 09:00 am, and on Tuesday another one on Avenida General Humberto Delgado, in Bragança, from 09:00 am.
On Wednesday, at 08:00, the authorities will be on Avenida João Franco, next to Ponte da Régua, in Peso da Régua, and on Friday, from 08:30, on Avenida Monsenhor Mendes do Carmo, in Guarda.
The campaign “At the wheel, the cell phone can wait” involves the National Road Safety Authority (ANSR), the GNR and the PSP and is part of the 2023 National Inspection Plan.
What is needed is enforcement. Everyone knows the dangers and that it is illegal to use a handheld device whilst driving, yet thousands flout the law. What is the use of announcing the locations in advance? This isn´t cricket, requiring fair play - get them fined and losing points on their licences!
