According to a report by Sapo, Viana do Castelo stands out as the only holiday destination in Portugal on the list of the best destinations for 2024, according to the Booking.com platform.
"Situated in the north of Portugal and just under an hour's drive from Porto International Airport, the charming coastal town of Viana do Castelo combines architectural grandeur, remarkable religious sites, and a vibrant culture in one destination. The picturesque town is known for its maritime heritage to this day, reflected in attractions such as the Gil Eannes Museum, a former hospital ship turned museum.
Viana do Castelo's privileged location right by the Atlantic Ocean has made it a mecca for surfing, kitesurfing and windsurfing, with Cabedelo Beach welcoming water sports lovers from all over the world. Off the sand, the city is filled with palaces, churches, and monasteries from various historical periods ranging from Renaissance to Baroque to Art Deco. Check out the iconic Sanctuary of Santa Luiza, which offers panoramic views and an impressive basilica," he adds.
The list is headed by Arraial d'Ajuda in Brazil, followed by Ermoupoli in Greece and Viana do Castelo, which occupies the third position on the list. Soon after, we find Daylesford (Australia), Grindelwald (Switzerland), Moab (United States of America), Uzès (France), Mazatlán (Mexico), Jaisalmer (India) and Fujikawaguchiko (Japan).
The selection of destinations was based on the 'Traveller Review Awards' of each region, determined by traveler reviews. Booking.com explained that these awards were underpinned by more than 309 million verified customer reviews, which evaluated the hospitality, service and standards of accommodations, as well as activities and transport providers. Only customers who have actually stayed in accommodation, rented cars or used taxi services have the possibility to leave reviews about their experiences on Booking.com.
This article is not completely true. Just last week I was not allowed into Lisbon Rio a club, just because I was colored skin. What's worse I had a ticket and the security person couldn't even provide a reason for not letting me in. When I nudged him for a reason, he threatened to get physical with me. Very distressing experience
