In a statement, the Senhora da Conceição Porto Parish clarifies that, in 2023, 224,184 meals were served in the city, based on data from 15 voluntary entities that form part of the Axis 6 (volunteering) of NPISA - Homeless Planning and Intervention Center.
The municipal support network for homeless people includes 63 entities in the city and is divided into six areas of action: social support, employment and training, housing, participation and citizenship, health, and volunteering.
Last year, around 46,000 volunteers from the 15 entities worked 16,385 hours on rounds and 1,392 trips.
4,415 volunteers were also mobilised, of which 93 were hired full-time.
The meals served represent an investment of 1.17 million euros, with the value per meal being 5.20 euros, an increase compared to 2022, when the price per meal was set at 4.90 euros.
In addition to the meals served by the entities, in the city of Porto the three solidarity restaurants, financed by the municipality, served 170 thousand meals, the result of an investment of more than 760 thousand euros.
Taking the data together, 394,184 meals were served to homeless people in the city of Porto, the result of an investment of more than 1.9 million euros.
The question is: WHY are there so many homeless people?

And naturally the good Portuguese people copy the American "solutions" that make homelessness a viable life style, thereby ensuring that the problem will never go away - in the same manner as here in the US where the homeless are growing by leaps and bounds. God helps those who help themselves.
