Based on more than 10,000 hotel reviews by travel journalists, The Telegraph Hotel Awards aim to answer the question, as explained by Rachel Cranshaw, hotels editor at The Telegraph: 'Which of these hotels can be considered the best of the best?'
The 50 best hotels in the world were recently evaluated and ranked by experts from the British newspaper, which has an international panel of evaluators, most of whom are residents of the destinations they review.
In addition to the Top 50, which also includes the Portuguese Palácio Príncipe Real in Lisbon, six special individual awards were also given to hotels that stood out in specific categories, such as 'best for sustainability', 'best for accessibility', 'best new hotel', 'best budget hotel', 'best spa hotel' and 'best family hotel', the latter of which was awarded to Martinhal Sagres.
The Telegraph's Destination Expert, journalist Mary Lussiana, states that "Martinhal Sagres has long been a benchmark for child-friendly resorts in the Algarve".
"Heated pools, surfing lessons, a myriad of water sports, and other activities promise endless entertainment for guests of all ages. The hotel is situated on a cliff above golden sands, surrounded by the Costa Vicentina nature reserve - a charming setting for a family holiday", she adds.
Opened in 2010, Martinhal Sagres received a rating of 9/10 in all categories assessed, including location, style and character, services and facilities, rooms, food and drink and value for money.
