Luís Montenegro was speaking at the opening of the Web Summit, which is taking place in Lisbon, in which, after a few words of greeting in English, he spoke in Portuguese.
“I am speaking Portuguese so I can say here and now, first hand, that in the first quarter of 2025 we will launch a Portuguese LLM - Large Language Model - to innovate in Portuguese, preserving our language and using our culture in the service of innovation”.
An LLM is a type of artificial intelligence (AI) program that can recognise and generate text, among other tasks.
The head of government considered that this tool will be “a critical step” that will allow new responses to be provided in several areas.
“Inclusive answers: giving every student an artificial intelligence educational tutor tailored to our curricula to help them understand the world. Giving each citizen access to public administration services in a simpler, more direct and personalised way to meet their needs”, he said.
On the other hand, he argued, this will “give each company the opportunity to design its services in an era of artificial intelligence also in Portuguese”.
“Let’s do it! Let's do this! Keep up the great work and enjoy Portugal!”, he appealed.
As a recent immigrant I do not understand the purpose of this article or the AI language program. I must learn Portuguese as soon as possible but I do not know if this program will help me. Is it to standardize the language for the residents, or something else.

The language is already highly standardised, some would even say too much… If you feel it isnt, perhaps it means you should stop waiting for an LLM to solve your issues and do more language courses.
