The award was presented on the evening of Sunday, November 24th, in a ceremony that took place in Madeira.
The Algarve was chosen as the favourite region from a list of 23 nominees that included several globally iconic beach destinations such as the Maldives, Cancún (Mexico), Seychelles, Philippines and Zanzibar, among others.
Considered the “Oscars of Tourism”, the awards highlight the best examples in the tourism and travel industry, in different categories, through voting by the main leaders in the sector from around the world.
“This award recognises the beauty and uniqueness of the Algarve coast, with 200 kilometres of beaches that have increasingly enchanted visitors from all over the world, combining scenes as diverse as extensive golden sands, hidden coves and impressive cliffs”, says the Algarve Tourism Region (RTA).
“Receiving this award again is an immense pride for our region and proof that the Algarve continues to consolidate its position on a global level as an unavoidable reference in beach tourism”, said André Gomes, president of the RTA.
“It is also, at the same time, an extra responsibility, which reinforces our determination to continue offering unique experiences, aligned with the highest international demands and capable of captivating visitors and exceeding their expectations. All those who work continuously to innovate and guarantee a superior quality tourist offer in our destination are to be congratulated, this award is a reflection of a collective effort from the entire region”, he adds.
The World Travel Awards had already distinguished the Algarve as “Best Beach Destination in the World” in 2020 and 2021, alongside the title of “Best Beach Destination in Europe” on several occasions.
Having spent two and a half magnificent months in Algarve in 2023 and enjoyed its people, food, weather and amazing beaches I find the choice 100% correct and worthy.

I wonder how much money changes hands for these awards. The beach award isn't the only one.

Under what rock are the editors of this "Portugal news" hiding, to even consider publishing this kind of nonsense. The Algarve a better beach destination than Thailand, Maladives or Seyshelles?? Come on, lets get serious here.
