“In 2025, Madeiran workers will receive an additional 65 euros, with the region advocating the biggest salary increase in the country, above the 870 euros of the National Minimum Wage and the 913.50 predicted for the Azores”, says the Regional Secretariat for Inclusion, Work and Youth.
In a statement released after a meeting of the Permanent Commission for Social Coordination, which took place in Funchal, the secretariat supervised by Ana Sousa clarifies that it decided to move forward with the proposal for a regional minimum wage of 915 euros, after having heard the social partners.
The social-democratic minority executive's proposal received favourable votes from the Madeira Construction Industry Association (ASSICOM), the General Union of Workers (UGT/Madeira) and the Union of Independent Unions (USI).
The Commercial and Industrial Association of Funchal-Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Madeira (ACIF-CCIM), the Madeira Farmers Association and the Union of Madeira Unions (USAM) voted against.
“The region has been practicing average increases above 3% in relation to the minimum wage set at national level, proof of the State Government's commitment to maintaining a balanced and consistent policy of increasing the value of the guaranteed minimum monthly remuneration, improving working conditions workers’ lives and the appreciation of work”, highlights the Secretary of Inclusion, Work and Youth, cited in the statement.
Ana Sousa reiterates the intention of the Madeiran executive to “maintain this continuous strategy of wage appreciation”, highlighting that the regional minimum wage has increased by 78%, equivalent to 400 euros, since 2015, the year in which social democrat Miguel Albuquerque assumed the presidency of the government.
Be careful what you wish for. This will increase the cost of goods and services in labour-intensive industries like hotels, restaurants, bars and cafés, so someone's pay rise will be your price increase.
