Algarve has second highest Covid transmission risk after north

The Algarve has been calculated as having the second highest Covid transmission risk after the northern region.

The risk of transmissibility (Rt) of covid-19 nationwide currently has values “very close to one” across the country, which indicates “despite everything, a stability in the progression of the pandemic”, said the director-general of health Graça Freitas. According to Graça Freitas, the northern region has a transmission rate of 1.18, the highest in the country, followed by the Algarve at 1.15.

Considering the low population density here in the Algarve how is this calculated? It just doesn't ring true when compared to urban centres such as Lisbon.

Means nothing. Cases, cases, cases are up up and away everywhere but people aren't going into hospitals, let alone the ICUs. This thing has now run its course. Time for a more balanced approach and get people back into meaningful employment.

this is impossible and must be a miss print or scare mongery- the Algarve has one of the lowest amount of cases since march in the world- plus people who live here are super careful !!!!!

Regardless of R ,,, the likely truth is there are far more cases (especially amongst the young) in the Algarve than the official figures suggest, many no doubt mild or hardly noticeable. There appears no evidence of test and trace taking place to underscore the numbers, save perhaps those saved. There is therefore an air of complacency based on what appears a low death rate and an unproven belief for many, that being outdoors at cafes restaurants etc., while enjoying a great deal of algarve sun (more annually than any other in Europe) is not Virus friendly. The same attitude in a big town in UK, France, Italy or Spain .. or elsewhere in the Northern Europe would cause a very different story, as it is ... Take care however , this winter might be a rude awakening..

So, within five days the Algarve moved from 2nd highest transmission rate in the country (1.15 on 9 August) to the lowest in the country (0.91 on 14 August).
BUT - since the number of confirmed cases in the Algarve keeps rising day by day (42 on 14th August), it means transmission rates in all other regions are now well above 1.
