The national commander of the ANPC, André Fernandes, warned, in a press conference at the national headquarters in Carnaxide (Oeiras), of “occasionally intense” precipitation expected in some areas of the country starting at dawn today, which will have an impact on the watersheds of the rivers Vez, Cávado, Tejo, Zêzere, in particular on the tributary of the river Nabão, “which may flood”.
“In view of this situation, a state of special yellow alert was also decreed until 23:59 on Monday. And above all, a warning to the population to remain attentive to the communications from the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere and the National Civil Protection Authority", said the commander, warning that the areas that flooded due to Wednesday's rain could again be affected.
“It is important to safeguard the behaviour of the population itself. […] In case of doubt, flooded areas or roads with water, do not cross, keep calm, make a U-turn when possible or wait”, warned the ANPC commander.
On Wednesday night, several tunnels in the city of Lisbon, for example, were flooded due to heavy rain.
The IPMA today raised the warning in force for the districts of Setúbal, Santarém, Lisbon, Leiria to orange due to heavy rain forecast for midnight on Sunday.
