The president of the Association of Olive Growers of Serra de Sicó (OLIVISICÓ), Isabel Guiomar, admitted that “the profitability of the fruit is a little lower this year” and that the quality in general “has also dropped a little”.
“Olive oil, with an acidity between 0.8 percent and 0.9 percent, does not have the quality it should have. It's not bad, but not what we would expect”.
The leader of OLIVISICÓ, headquartered in the municipality of Ansião, north of the district of Leiria, explained that, in order to prevent the olives from rotting, due to the fly attack, “there were many people who started to harvest earlier”.
Isabel Guiomar stressed, however, that "this was an abundant year", unlike 2020, which registered a "much lower" production.
“The new practices of pruning and cultivating the olive tree have given better results in recent years”, said the president of OLIVISICÓ.
