Between December 18, 2024, and January 2, 2025, 502 fewer accidents were recorded than in the same previous period, but there were five more fatalities, eight more serious injuries and 13 more minor injuries (1,692), announced the National Road Safety Authority (ANSR), the PSP and the GNR, in a joint statement to take stock of the road safety campaign “The best gift is to be present”.

According to data released, in relation to the same period in 2023/2024, traffic accidents had an increase of 25% in the number of fatal victims, 7.5% in the number of serious injuries and 0.8% in the number of minor injuries, but there was an 8.4% decrease in the number of accidents.

The 25 fatalities resulted from accidents in the districts of Aveiro (two deaths), Beja (one death), Braga (two deaths), Castelo Branco (one death), Faro (three deaths), Guarda (one death), Leiria ( three dead), Lisbon (six dead), Porto (one dead), Santarém (two dead), Setúbal (two dead) and Viseu (one dead).

In the six remaining districts of the continent – ​​Bragança, Coimbra, Évora, Portalegre, Viana do Castelo and Vila Real – as well as in the autonomous regions of Madeira and the Azores, “the objective of zero deaths on Portuguese roads was achieved”, says the statement.

In accidents with fatal victims, rollovers predominated, involving eight passenger vehicles, seven motorcycles, a quadricycle and an agricultural vehicle.

There were also six collisions, which involved nine light vehicles, two motorcycles and two bicycles, in addition to three collisions, which involved the same number of light vehicles and which resulted in three deaths.

Of the 25 fatal victims, 21 were male and four were female, aged between 19 and 76, the data says.
