The singer was jailed after he shared his song on social media in support of protests over the death of Iranian-Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini. An online video showed Hajipour in a darkened room, wiping tears away after the announcement. Picking up the honour on the singer's behalf Jill Biden said that a song “can unite, inspire and ultimately change the world.”
