One of the
most popular doces in
Portugal é the pastel de nata.
The most
famous versão is
the Pastel de Belém.
Já
o experimentaram?
The pastel de nata is a puff
pastry recheada com creme.
Os
ingredientes are farinha, açúcar, manteiga, leite, baunilha, and gemas de ovo.
Many pessoas like to put canela em pó on top.
Podem
comer a pastel
de nata and drink a coffee for lanche.
É
simples, but very delicioso.
How did
you do? If you’re a native English speaker, you may have noticed there are a
number of Portuguese-English cognates. Cognates are words that are similar in
two languages, usually due to a common root language.
You could
probably guess the meaning of ingredientes, simples,
and delicioso, even if you don’t know any Portuguese. However, words like já, recheada, and manteiga
may have been more difficult.
Keep an
eye out for “falsos amigos” (false friends / false cognates)! For example, the
word lanche
may sound similar to “lunch”, but it actually means something different.
