In
a statement, the Public Security Police indicates that, in January, in its area
of responsibility, the urban centers, there were 4,737 serious injuries, which
caused nine deaths, 77 serious injuries and 1,304 minor injuries.
Compared
to the same month last year, the PSP saw an increase of 18% in accidents, 22%
in fatalities and 21% in serious injuries, while minor injuries decreased by
15%.
The
PSP also highlights that in the first month of the year, 409 people were
arrested for driving without a legal license and 526 for driving under the
influence of alcohol, while in January 2022 this police registered 394 and 440
arrests, respectively.
In
January, it fined 514 drivers who were driving under the influence of alcohol
and detected 5,586 speeding drivers, 218 more than in the same period of 2022.
“Driving
at high speeds and under the influence of alcohol has direct implications for
controlling vehicles and increasing the reaction and braking distance,
translating into an increase in the distance needed to stop a vehicle safely
and in a decrease in the probability of that the driver manages to avoid an
accident”, says the police.
The
PSP advances that it establishes “as a priority the supervision of driving at
excessive speed and under the influence of alcohol and psychotropic
substances”, taking into account the direct implications in the occurrence of
road accidents.
