Carlos Moedas and Rosário Farmhouse counted down to zero and pressed the button to turn on the lights of the Christmas tree in Praça do Comércio but... nothing happened.

The moment was recorded on video in a live broadcast by the Lisbon City Council.

"Ooooooh" can be heard in unison when the lights don't come on, however shortly afterwards, both the tree and the facades of the buildings light up.

This year the council "chose to reduce the hours for Christmas lighting, guaranteeing savings of 50% in energy consumption compared to last year".

The hours of the traditional Christmas illuminations will be from 6pm to 11pm from Sunday to Thursday, from 6pm to midnight on Friday and Saturday, and from 6pm to 1am on Christmas Day and New Year's Eve.

In addition, the lighting will "use low-consumption lamps with LED technology".
