The Maritime Authority said interaction with these mammals occurs mainly “due to the curious behaviour of young orcas”, which are “attracted by the mobile and noisy structures of vessels, such as the rudder and propeller”. The warning comes after a number of small sail boats have reported collisions with orcas off Portugal’s coast, the most recent of which reportedly happened on Saturday.
