According to the municipality chaired by Manuel Machado, the project has an estimated cost of 1.7 million euros and will create “a new, more comfortable and inclusive mobility solution, which will be the result of cooperation between the municipality and the University of Coimbra ( UC) and Metro Mondego SA". The objective of the investment is to reduce the time and distance of the pedestrian connection between the future stop of the Mondego Mobility System, in Praça da República, next to the Academic Theatre of Gil Vicente (TAGV), and Polo I of the UC.
The project is part of “the implementation of the Mondego Mobility System, the network of electric buses (metrobus) that will connect Serpins (Lousã) and Coimbra B, with an urban line to the Hospital and University Center of Coimbra, in a total length of 42 kilometers”, says the municipality in a statement sent today to the Lusa agency.
According to the note, "it is precisely this urban line from the Hospital that will have a stop at Praça da República, next to the TAGV, and will transfer passengers who intend to go to Polo I of UC". To make the short journey “more comfortable and inclusive”, the City Council of Coimbra studied and produced a project for the installation of vertical elevators on the right side slope of the Monumental Stairs, an equipment that “intends to overcome a height of 125 steps , approximately 21 meters , in a projection of 60 meters in length”.
At the city council meeting scheduled for 3pm on Monday, the executive will also analyse and vote on the proposal for the attribution of one-off financial support, of 75 thousand euros, for the realisation of the Coimbra Image Station 2021 Award, which will take place on 29th of May to July 25th.
This is an event with international projection, organized by the municipality and by the Estação Image association, which includes a photojournalism prize, the attribution of a scholarship, exhibitions, book publishing, workshops, a photography book market, conferences and other side activities. The event essentially promotes photographic reporting and has nine contest categories: News, Contemporary Issues, Daily Life, Sports, Art and Shows, Environment, Portrait Series, Photo of the Year and Europe Award.
The awarded works give rise to an exhibition and the publication of a book. The award will take to Coimbra seven major photojournalism exhibitions and several open classes dedicated to photojournalists. The executive's meeting also includes a proposal to support the Rally de Portugal, which will once again have an official departure from Coimbra (20th and 21st May) and another for the attribution of financial support to three associations that manage municipal cultural facilities.
According to the note, the issue is the attribution of support totaling 210 thousand euros to the Orquestra Clássica do Centro (for 2021), 345,000 euros to the O Teatrão group, and 330 thousand euros to the Escola da Noite - Theater Group of Coimbra (2021 , 2022 and 2023).
