In October, 762 more people died in Portugal compared to September, which represents an increase of 8.7%, according to data released by the INE. In the accumulated result for the year, that, between January and October, more than 102,000 people died in Portugal, which represents a drop of 1% compared to the same period last year.

Last month, 9,495 people died in Portugal, that is, 762 more than in September and 97 more than in the same period last year. With regard specifically to Covid, the number of deaths associated with the disease increased to 217, that is, 39 more compared to September and 33 more compared to the same period last year. Deaths from Covid represent 2.3% of the total number of deaths reported in the country.

In the accumulated result for the year, that is, between January and October, there continues to be a downward trend in mortality. In the first ten months of the year, 102,272 deaths were declared in Portugal, 1,036 less than in the same period in 2021 (-1%).

Births

INE also provides data on births and marriages for September. In that month, 7,620 babies were born in Portugal, which represents an increase of 5.2% compared to the same period in the previous year (7,246 had been born). For the year, until September, 61,678 children were born in Portugal, that is, 2,214 more (3.7%) compared to the same period last year.

In this context, the natural balance in Portugal (ie the difference between births and deaths) remains negative, despite a slight decrease. In September, “the natural balance was -1,103, slightly decreasing compared to the same month of 2021 when it registered a value of -1,305. In the first nine months of 2022, the accumulated value of the natural balance was -30,898, showing a reduction in relation to the value observed in the same period of 2021 (-34,357)”, indicates the statistics office.

In terms of weddings, 5,128 weddings were celebrated in September in the national territory, which represents an increase of 14.4% compared to the same period last year (645 more). In the year, there were 28,989 marriages, that is, 6,979 more (31.7%) compared to the same period in 2021.
