In a statement, the Regional Health Administration (ARS) of the Algarve reported that of the total of 174 doctors, 134 are undergoing general training and 40 are for specialised training at the Centro Hospitalar Universitário do Algarve (CHUA).

A medical internship takes place after a degree or integrated master's degree in Medicine and corresponds to a process of specialised medical training, theoretical and practical, which aims to enable the doctor to practice technically.

In the first year, known as general training, doctors spend nine months in the hospital services of Internal Medicine, Paediatrics, and General Surgery, the remaining three being dedicated to the specialty of General and Family Medicine and Public Health.

Specialised training can last from four to six years, depending on the specialty.

As part of the specialised training, the intern doctors were placed in the hospitals of Faro and Portimão, in the specialties of Anesthesiology (two), Cardiology (one), General Surgery (two), Infectious Diseases (one), Gastroenterology (one), Gynecology and Obstetrics (three), Immunoallergology (one), Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (four), Intensive Care Medicine (three), Internal Medicine (seven), Nephrology (one), Neurosurgery (one), Medical Oncology (two), Otorhinolaryngology (one ), Clinical Pathology (one), Paediatrics (two), Pulmonology (two), Psychiatry (two), Radiology (two) and Rheumatology (one).

The CHUA informed that in addition to the 174 internal physicians, it also received four pharmaceutical residents who will complete their training at the institution over the next four years.
