According to the Employment and Vocational Training Institute (IEFP), at the end of June, 377,872 unemployed were registered in the Employment Services of the Mainland and the Autonomous Regions, a number that represents 66.9 percent of a total of 564,442 job applications.
The total number of unemployed registered in the country was lower than in the same month of 2020 (with 28,793 less unemployed, equivalent to a drop of 7.1 percent) and also lower than the previous month (with less than 24,311 unemployed, a drop of 6 percent).
According to IEFP, the group of those who have been registered for less than a year contributed to the decrease in registered unemployment, compared to the same month of 2020 (-71,138) and, in the opposite direction, the largest increase in unemployment was contributed by those who remain registered for a year or more (with 42,345).
At a regional level, in June, unemployment registered, in year-on-year terms, increased only in the Madeira region (5.5 percent).
The remaining regions registered negative variations, with the Algarve recording the sharpest decline (-23.4 percent).
In a note on the numbers released by IEFP, the Ministry of Labour, Solidarity and Social Security (MTSSS) highlights that this is the first month in more than a year in which unemployment is below the 400,000 mark.
MTSSS also highlights that accommodation, restaurants and similar was the sector that registered the most significant decrease in unemployment, with 7,638 fewer people compared to May.
