In a statement, the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory (INL) states that “the most visible face” of the initiative will be the construction of a living laboratory, in the centre of Braga, with the support of the municipality, to demonstrate how the batteries are going to be decisive in the electricity grids of the near future.
Until June 2023, “2030 Batteries” partners will work together to create technologies based on lines of research that are at different stages of maturity, in order to change the way energy is produced, stored and managed.
Cited in the statement, Raul Cunha, from the DST solar company, which leads the project, underlines that “the current development model, based on intensive fossil energy consumption, combined with the territorial dynamics that tend to concentrate the majority of the population in urban areas, poses important energy challenges for the development of the cities of the future ”.
“Thus, as the world population becomes increasingly urbanised, with more than half (55 percent) currently living in cities and with prospects of increasing to a proportion of 68 percent by 2050, the decarbonisation of cities has become instrumental in combating climate change”, he adds.
