At the swearing-in ceremony of the new GNR commander-general, Lieutenant General José Santos Correia, which took place at the Ministry of Internal Administration (MAI), José Luís Carneiro maintained that the Government assumed, within the scope of the State Budget for 2023, “as a priority the professional and technical valorization of the human resources of the security forces and services and their conditions for the exercise of the activity and the creation of better conditions for the full mission” through the implementation of the infrastructure and equipment programming law.

“With regard to the GNR, in addition to the effort to gradually improve the salary conditions of its officers, it seems to be underlined, within the framework of a national policy to reinforce the effectives of the security forces and services, the measure of rejuvenation, expressed in the admission of about 1,500 new guards during the year 2022, with the expectation of admitting more than 1,000 officers in 2023”, said the minister, in a ceremony presided over by the Prime Minister, António Costa.

José Luís Carneiro also advanced that “an investment of more than 600 million euros is planned and authorised to modernise infrastructure, materials and technology, providing better conditions of dignity, fundamental to the operational success” of the GNR.
