According the Directorate-General for Health (DGS), the decision is part of an update of the rule on the seasonal vaccination campaign against the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, which now provides for “access of the adult population between 18 and 49 years old to the second vaccination booster against Covid-19 by individual decision.
According to the directorate-general, following the opinion of the Technical Commission for Vaccination against Covid-19, the administration of this second booster dose will be “operationalized in the coming days”.
“This update is carried out at a time when the majority of the eligible population, within the scope of the 2022-2023 seasonal vaccination campaign, is vaccinated”, said the DGS, adding that, since September, more than three million doses have already been administered, mostly to priority eligible groups, over 50 years of age, which contributed to "mitigating the impact of severe disease in higher risk groups".
"These results confirm, once again, the high adherence of citizens to vaccination as a form of protection, as well as the decisive role of vaccines in the response to covid-19", stressed the DGS, while reiterating the "importance of seasonal vaccination as the most effective disease prevention measure throughout the winter months”.
