The mayor of Lisbon, Carlos Moedas (PSD), has announced that he intends to create a fund of at least three million euros to support traders and individuals who have suffered losses from the bad weather. The intention of the mayor was expressed during an interview with TVI, in which he spoke about the measures that can be taken to minimise the impact of the floods in the city of Lisbon.

“I will propose to the City Council [of Lisbon] a fund to help these people with at least three million euros. I'm doing the maths. It is important that people know that the City Council will act quickly. We have to help people right now, precisely because we don't have a structural solution”, said Carlos Moedas.

Carlos Moedas defended the need for the Government to be quick with the support it will provide. “The government has to help now. It has to be quick”, he appealed.

In the interview, the mayor again underlined that the phenomena of enormous rainfall that occurred at dawn today and at the end of last week "are very difficult to predict" and that the structural solution to mitigate their effects will be the construction of two tunnels for drainage. “The only solution is drainage tunnels,” he said.

He explained, that the idea is to build a tunnel between the Monsanto and Santa Apolónia areas and between Chelas and Beato, preventing water from reaching the lower areas of the city of Lisbon. Until this structural solution is implemented, the mayor of Lisbon admits that the only way to prevent accidents is to allow people to stay at home, arguing that companies must be prepared for this situation.
