According to data released by the Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual (ICA), in August cinemas registered 734,835 spectators and €4 million in box office revenue, which represents almost four times more than in August 2020, which had 280,000 spectators and €1.5 million.
Despite this rise, the data is still far below the regular frequency of Portuguese people in movie theatres, pre-pandemic of Covid-19, that is, before March 2020.
In August 2019, according to ICA data, Portuguese cinemas accounted for 1.8 million viewers and €9.9 million in revenue.
The most watched film by the Portuguese in cinemas in August was Suicide Squad by James Gunn.
"Bem Bom", by Patrícia Sequeira, was the Portuguese film with the highest audience numbers in August, totalling 80,128 viewers.
