In his seventh Christmas message since taking office as prime minister, António Costa praised the way in which health professionals have been committed to combating Covid-19.
“After the tireless work in 2020; after the dramatic wave they had to face in January and February of this year, the health professionals were once again unsurpassed – and in this case, very especially the nurses – in the remarkable vaccination operation”, he declared.
In this context, the prime minister also highlighted that his “intense experience of these two years” only reinforced his pride in the Portuguese and his confidence in the National Health Service (SNS).
He then left warnings regarding the evolution of the pandemic in the coming months.
“The vaccine has proven to be the most effective weapon in fighting the pandemic, an extraordinary victory for science, but the war is not over. As we know, there are millions of human beings around the world who still have not had access to the vaccine and, as long as that is the case, the virus will remain active and the risk of developing into new variants will persist”, he warned.
Therefore, for the executive's leader, "it is essential to accelerate vaccination on a global scale and continue the vaccination boost in Portugal".
“Schools, entities in the solidarity sector, local authorities, the State and the European Union did everything possible – and even when it so often seemed impossible – to help everyone”, he said.
However, according to António Costa, employment has "fully" recovered from pre-pandemic levels and Portugal has resumed "robust growth".
“We cannot lose focus on the national recovery effort. And we must do so with the confidence of a people who, having overcome each stage of this pandemic, are capable of overcoming themselves, of facing the future with hope”, he added.
Merry Christmas!
Anyone still listening to them?
It's over!

I feel like I'm living in a parallel reality. In my reality, the government instituted policies that make tourism risky, difficult, expensive, and unpleasant. Dining and entertainment venues are being shut down or forced to operate under crippling restrictions. The intention of these futile disruptions seems to be keeping omicron at bay; apparently we prefer the lethal delta strain to the nearly harmless omicron strain. In any case, the government needs to project bold decisiveness going into the election. "Never let a crisis go to waste."

When will these people grow up and admit that they will never get rid of this
Virus. It is here to stay. Just live with it.

I'd love to get the booster, but the system can't keep up with demand. Stop blaming us for not getting it when I'm not allowed to get it.

I like the way you praise the health workers Mr Costa. That doesn't put food on the table but paying their wages might!

Dear Martin, nobody is suggesting that the virus will go away. We live with many and manage their effects. Perhaps you'd also like to abandon other vaccinations, so we can "learn to live" (or die) with polio, measles, etc. Perhaps you'd also like to bring back smallpox? Get real!

Dear Paula, perhaps you'd like to go and work in a hospital ICU for a few days, then come back and let us know if it's "all over".

I agree with Prime Minister Costa that the vaccination process is vital to the world, it countries and its economies which underpin the well being of all. But I do not understand why his policy refuses to provide me, a visitor to this wonderful country, with a booster vaccination? I am here for 3 months and since my arrival in November, the Omicron variant has caused much confusion and made apparent the double standards which are being applied. My travel plan will see me home only in February and I am eligible for a booster (3rd shot) but I cannot obtain one in Portugal. Difficult to comprehend?

Polio and measels? Ever heard of vaccinated people against those two, getting 'milder' infections? Infecting others vaccinated against polio or measels? Ending up in hospital? Even dying from it?
For goodness sake, critical thinking has truly been eradicated from society, people just repeat the nonsense telly says, no matter how stupid. Because no matter how bad, politicians and journalists still get paid, so they have no monkey in this circus.
Wake up!

Is this the Paula I know from the other side of the "pond"?
Anyway, if this "gent" - yes, the impudent António Costa - instead of "unsurpassed talk" and "unsurpassed corruption" would admit his obtuse thinking, mismanagement, and gross mistakes and quickly resign, we all would be, no doubt about it, incomparably better!
