Speaking to CNN, Graça Freitas left open the possibility of a further delay, due to the advancement of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus.
When asked about the topic, specifically the return to school within two weeks, she said: "We'll see." Then she added: “If it is possible to return with confidence, classes will be resumed. If not, the measures that will be considered necessary will be taken.”
Classes were supposed to start on January 3rd, but the Government decided, at the Council of Ministers on November 25th, to postpone the restart to January 10th,In this context, Graça Freitas this Thursday appealed to parents to vaccinate their children, but asserted that they will not be discriminated against in the school environment if they have not taken the Covid-19 vaccine.
Many families have just extended their holidays in other countries (Spain etc) and will return a week later. So all this will achieve is denying many children a week of classroom learning. Time for Portuguese to vote this hopeless socialist government out!
