The number of daily infections is today, for the second day in a row, above 40,000 cases, after reaching 40,945 on Wednesday, the highest since the beginning of the pandemic.

According to the daily report on the epidemiological situation released by the DGS, there are now 1,699 patients hospitalised in the wards, 64 more than on Wednesday, and 162 in Intensive Care Units, five less in the last 24 hours.

Active cases have increased again in the last 24 hours, totalling 286,965, 10,071 more than on Wednesday, and 30,041 people have recovered from the disease, which brings the national total of recovered to 1,468,309.

Of the 22 deaths, 12 occurred in the Lisbon and Tagus Valley region, six in the North, three in the Centre region and one in the Azores.

Lisbon and Vale do Tejo is the region of the country with the most new cases in the last 24 hours, with 16,062, followed by the North (14,866), with these two regions accounting for 77% of new infections.

The Centre region recorded 4,232 new infections in the last 24 hours, Madeira 1,960, Alentejo 1,255, Algarve 1,121 and Azores 540.

Hospital admissions are the highest since 10 months ago, when on March 6, 1,708 patients were hospitalized.

According to DGS data, 15 of the 22 fatalities were over 80 years old, four were between 70 and 79 years old, one between 60 and 69 years old, another between 50 and 59 and another between 40 and 49 years old.

The highest number of deaths since the beginning of the pandemic is concentrated in the elderly over 80 years old (12,431), followed by the age groups between 70 and 79 years old (4,175) and between 60 and 69 years old (1,767).

The largest number of new diagnosed cases is in the age group between 40 and 49 years old (7,574), followed by 20 to 29 years old (6,833), 30 to 39 years old (6,776), 50 and 59 years old (5,725 ), between 10 and 19 years old (4,862), up to 9 years old (3,172), between 60 and 69 years old (2,892), between 70 and 79 years old (1,376) and elderly people over 80 years old (924) .

Since the beginning of the pandemic, in March 2020, the Lisbon and Tagus Valley region has recorded 703,912 cases and 8,091 deaths.

In the North region, there were 646,804 infections and 5,834 deaths and the Central region now has an accumulated total of 238,794 infections and 3,392 deaths.

The Algarve has a total of 69,702 infections and 602 deaths and Alentejo has 59,659 cases and 1,097 deaths from covid-19.

The Autonomous Region of Madeira has had 39,296 infections and 132 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic and the Azores archipelago 16,310 cases and 55 deaths.

The regional authorities of the Azores and Madeira publish their data daily, which may not coincide with the information disclosed in the DGS bulletin.

In Portugal, since March 2020, 19,203 people have died, 10,106 were men and 9,097 were women.
