According to a message shared by André Ventura with Lusa agency, the social network conveyed to the leader of Chega that his account “has been suspended and will not be reinstated because it violates Twitter’s terms of service, specifically Twitter’s rules against the conduct of the propagation of hatred".
“It is against our rules to promote violence, or directly attack, or threaten other people based on their race, ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, religion, age, disability or illness,” reads the statement.
Twitter further noted that "if it determines that an account's primary purpose is to harm another based on one of these categories, that account may be suspended without notice."
Without the message in question specifying the content that led to the suspension of the account, André Ventura indicated that it was “evidently” a publication that shared an image of the attack perpetrated in Paris on January 7, 2015 - in which a policeman was killed and 11 journalists from the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo - and the message “only Chega understands the risks of uncontrolled Islamic immigration”.
When trying to access André Ventura's Twitter account, the message “Account suspended: Twitter suspends accounts that violate the Twitter Rules” appears.
In a message sent to Lusa, Ventura considered that the suspension is “zero degree of democracy” and wondered if “one cannot talk about the dangers of Islamic immigration, or of gypsies attacking the hospital in Famalicão?”.
“I will probably go to court,” he said.
Twitter is now a shame! Is this respect for democracy and the plurality of opinions within a democratic system? Or is it undignified behaviour and unacceptable abuse of power by an every day more powerful, impune and controlling media that dictates what what it is or it is not acceptable? This huge powerful and society controlling companies feel themselves as the owners of the true! They are the new gods of a corrupt and decaying society!
