In a situation report made on its website, CIVISA says it has concluded “that the tectonic structures where the historic eruptions of 1580 and 1808, and the seismovolcanic crisis of 1964, in the Fissural Volcanic System of Herds, were reactivated”.
"CIVISA warns of the possibility of earthquakes that can reach magnitudes higher than those recorded so far, as well as the danger of landslides potentiated by seismic activity”.
Even so, and according to CIVISA, the campaign to measure gases and temperature in the soil, which has been carried out since the beginning of this crisis, "in the epicentral area has not resulted, to date, in the identification of any anomaly".
CIVISA also adds that "field surveys" will continue "to take place in the coming days".
Within the scope of geodetic monitoring, CIVISA, in collaboration with other entities, is "strengthening the observation network based on GNSS stations and processing satellite images".
According to CIVISA, the seismovolcanic crisis that has been occurring since the afternoon of March 19 in the central part of the island of São Jorge, in a sector between Velas and Fajã do Ouvidor, "continues above reference values".
The institution says that throughout Sunday "the preliminary analysis of the seismic records allowed to count about 389 events", which denotes "a decreasing trend" compared to Saturday.
As a English-speaking and Azorean resident, I was particularly disappointed with this article and the literal translation of "Manadas", the name of a place to "Herds". I am disappointed that an Anglo-Portuguese website would allow this type of error to occur. I would suggest better copy-editing in the future and/or less reliance on Google Translate. This type of error is worrisome.
