According to data from the National Statistics Institute (INE), the month with the most weddings was March, with 2,065, while February registered 1,707 marriages and in January there were 1,485.
There were about five times more marriages celebrated in the first quarter of 2022 compared to the same period in 2021, which registered a total of 1,435 marriages.
In 2021, the month of January registered 814 marriages, in February there were 177 and in March 444.
Statistical data must be read taking into account the successive states of emergency enacted in Portugal since March 18, 2020, because of the covid-19 pandemic.
The number of marriages performed in 2020 in Portugal decreased by 43.1% (18,902) compared to 2019 (33,272), with April being the month in which fewer marriages took place.
INE data indicate that in 2020 there were 18,902 marriages, that is, 43.1% less than in 2019, the year in which 33,272 marriages took place in Portugal (3.9% less than in 2018).
