Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, the price of a
basket of essential products has soared by more than 27 euros to 210.85 euros,
which represents an increase of almost 15%, according to the Portuguese
Association for Consumer Protection (Deco). Meat, dairy products and fruits and
vegetables are the categories that have increased the most in price, with
increases of 21%, 19% and 15%, respectively.
The Russian invasion of Ukraine has pushed up energy prices
even further, exacerbating the rise in prices of various food products. Since
then, the price of the same basket of essential goods has soared by 27.22
euros, which represents an increase of 14.83% compared to that recorded on
February 23 (183.63 euros), one day before the war.
In the last eight months, meat, dairy and fruit and
vegetables were the three categories that increased the most in price. Between
February 23, the day before the conflict erupted, and last Wednesday, the price
of meat soared 21.17% (up 6.83 euros), while dairy products rose by 19.08% (up
2.19 euros) and fruit and vegetables were 15.27% more expensive (3.60 euros
more). The price of fish rose 14.75% (8.90 euros more).
