“It has been seven very intense years, since the threat of sanctions against Portugal, the need to stabilize the financial system, exiting the European Union's Excessive Deficit Procedure, facing natural disasters and a pandemic, now experiencing a war and a cycle of inflation not seen for 30 years. But it was seven years in which we presented results and left marks”, said the prime minister.
In terms of economic growth, António Costa defended the thesis that in the 15 years prior to 2015 the country grew by an average of 0.2%, while in the last seven “it grew by an average of 2%, that is, ten times more”.
After noting that the unemployment rate has fallen by less than half from 2015 to the present, he argued that Portugal has converged with the European Union average in all the years of its governments, except for 2020.
“Growing above average means getting closer to the most developed countries within the framework of the European Union and, according to the European Commission and international organizations, we will continue to grow above the European average in 2023 and in 2024. When we grow above the European average, we even get closer to the most developed countries, to the forefront”, he observed.
According to data presented by António Costa regarding GDP per capita, since 2015, Portugal's distance from France has decreased by 2.6 percentage points.
“Regarding Germany it decreased by 3.8 percentage points and compared to Spain it even decreased by 7.1 percentage points. Yes, we are growing more than Germany, France and Spain - and it is in relation to these countries that we are approaching”, he said.
Just moved back to Germany after almost 4 years living and contributing in Portugal. Why? Because people think bad of foreign workers. I worked and built a company in Portugal, but was treated either as tourist or digital nomad. I paid loads of taxes and of course consumed regional things. But still the opinion of Portuguese was bad towards me and my partner. We are happy to be back. The economical growth is absorbed by the government and the people still treat you like an alien. The short term thinking of Portugal will lead to nothing. Next crisis is programmed. Now everything is pushed into digital economy without paying attention to sustainable digital concepts. It will lead to layoffs (as you can see the big software companies as Twitter etc.). It is the foreign companies that bring you that growth. Funnily the bigger players regarding digital economy are German, French and Spanish companies!

Do people still believe these lying socialists? Even Romania has a higher standard of living than Portugal which has received decades of EU funding.

So portugal decides to pick on a statistic that for once makes Portugal seem better than Germany, while in the meantime any inteligent person will know that Germany is much ahead of portugal in many aspects. I may not know much but isnt Germany really commited to helping Ukraine? Does Child money or Parent money exist in Portugal? How much does Portugal help with providing good funds to couples that want to have a child. Its known that Portugal as alot of eldery population and that we are lacking youth. Not to mention that the youth we have in portugal, is going abroad for better life conditions.
Feels like Portugal decided to pick on a 1 value that they could finally say "we are better than Germany and heres proof in this number"

Mui and K speak some truth, but I still believe Potugal can change. At times and places it is racist, but so is Germany, very in the east.
"No news is good news" is still too popular here.
I live in hope that such a beautiful country will realise we all have problems and we all have to change.
A Lisbon businessman told me.....you've been here long enough, you know how it works - nobody knows what they are doing!
When will the government prove this man wrong.

Being born in Portugal and living here for 24, my German girlfriend came with me to live in Portugal for an unknown amount of time, and it has been a year since. I had never really understood the conditions or standarts this country gives that i was living with.
She made me see and understand it. You would be smart as well to understand that what this new claims, its bullcrap because Portugal is not an altruistic country neither does it invest on improving their system regarding many topics. Rent is so high that for a decent place for 1 person can be as high as 70% of the minimum salary amount.
We plan to go back to Germany, its just that in the meantime we struggle to get back a decent amount to finally move back.

Joe, Portugal has had DECADES and DECADES of EU funding and opportunities to change. It has not. It continues fostering poverty and corruption. Even Brussels is fed up with this circus called Portugal. It is a land of ignorance, laziness and liars. The Algarve is one example where scams abound and continue. The rest is all marketing - "give me your money" and then move on to the next person to scam.

Oh boy, here it goes again all the naysayers trashing and bashing Portugal and its people. You all need to get a life and leave if you're not happy here.
