"We are a country of emigrants and immigrants and this is a valuable mark of our culture and society", said Augusto Santos Silva, in a publication on his official account on Twitter.
In the video that accompanies the message, the president of parliament stated that Portugal needs to "do much more", both in supporting Portuguese emigrants abroad and in welcoming immigrants living in Portugal.
"But we have done a lot and we stand out internationally in what we do and that is what we, today, International Migrants Day, must underline", he defended.
The speaker of parliament recalled that Portugal has been "a country of emigrants for many centuries", saying that the number of those born in Portugal and living in another country for more than a year is around 2.5 million, using the United Nations criteria.
"We are many Portuguese and descendants of Portuguese who live in virtually every country in the world and these are part of Portugal, all of them", he stressed.
On the other hand, the second figure of the State stressed that Portugal is "increasingly a country of immigrants"."
"Almost 700,000 foreign people live in Portugal today and we are characterized by welcoming these people very well, we are internationally considered one of the countries most receptive to migration, one of the countries that best welcomes and best integrates foreigners", he said.

The speaker of Parliament needs glasses, hearing aid, something; because not all foreigners are treated decently, let alone “well received”. Black people, gay people are not well treated here, as it´s visible by people explaining their ACTUAL EXPERIENCE in comments´ section in Pt News´ article “Immigrants protest against SEF”, written a day ago.

Have noticed a considerable risk in Portugal's policy regarding immigration in recent years. Here the authorities do not check at all where the money for the real estate purchases are coming from; this means a full money laundry of the Russians and the Ukrainian oligarks. I can see many of top model Mercedes -and Lexus - cars here in the neighbourhood those people are driving daily with their Russian or Ukrainian number plates. These are cars are out of the reach of original Portugese people. - This development is crucial in the real estate business and, it will cause the property market very much harm when the mafia is the leader in running this business. - So please do not be blind to these criminals and stop it now when it still is possible.

Portugal is a very welcoming country when it comes to immigrants choosing to live here compared to alot of other countries that don't welcome or even try to welcome let alone integrate with new immigrants.

People please, although they are Homo sapient humans just like the rest of us mere mortals, the facts are here and have always been here for us to once and for all understand namely. Please don’t pay much attention to when a ‘Politician’ speaks or writes, at least not to the majority. Their credibility, at most levels, are still today as close to Zero as possible. A funny species. Basically. No different than other pieces of land, we welcome immigrants in this country but also in so many ways despise them. We need labour and capital yet we haven’t found a balanced way to deal with all of this incoming. For obvious reasons we just don’t need separation yet at the same time we are experts in the field of difference.
