Martinez stepped down as the coach of Belgium following their
disappointing performance at the World Cup.
It had been muted that he may return to his home country of Spain for a
new position but since then it has been reported he will be heading to Portugal
instead.
According to David Ornstein for the Atlantic: “Martinez has
reached a verbal agreement to become the new head coach of Portugal’s national
team. The appointment of the 49 year old
Spaniard is on course to be finalised by the end of next week”.
Fernando Santos left the job following the performance of
Portugal in the World Cup. Since then
numerous names have been linked to the job, including José Mourinho.
Not a good move.
We need a patriotic Portuguese coach, someone for who winning is a matter of pride and love not a mere contractual obligation.
