The AT has shared on social media, links to an information booklet about NIF numbers for foreign citizens, who can have them and how to get one.

The Tax Authorities recalls that "registration as a taxpayer is mandatory for all citizens, national or foreign, resident or non-resident who, under the terms of the law, are subject to compliance with tax obligations or intend to exercise their rights with the AT".

The AT also explains that "registration as a taxpayer implies obtaining a tax identification number (NIF) and is an essential condition for many acts of everyday life, not only fiscal, but related with employment, contracts, the opening of bank accounts, social security".

It is worth remembering that the request for NIF assignment can be made either electronically on the Finance Portal, through (e-branch); or in person, at any Finanças (by appointment) or Citizen's Shop.
