Several riders have already said that the gravel escapes on the Algarve track are not safe and year after year they have raised this issue, asking for something to be done to rectify the issue.
Carmelo Ezpeleta, the CEO of Dorna, which manages the rights to the MotoGP World Championship, made it clear that if the circuit does nothing in 2024, the Portuguese Grand Prix will not take place.
"Unless the state of the gravel runs completely changes, we won't have a MotoGP event here next year. That's pretty clear," said the Spaniard, speaking to Speedweek.
“With the current situation, which has claimed many victims, Portimão 2024 will not have a place on the calendar. We have enough requests from other countries and circuits. I made that very clear to the Portuguese. Without gravel escapes in accordance with the regulations, the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve will not receive a Grade A homologation for 2024, so it cannot be included in the calendar", added Ezpeleta.
It's not the only issue for sure that needs to be addressed at the track. After my first visit to the facility and spending a mil in euros to attend, I am not the only person strongly considering ever returning again. The place was dirty and needed jet washing everywhere including all outdoor seats and stands. No instructions for VIP ticket holders for where, what, and when. To get inside you had to be checked IN and OUT. Why OUT? And to top it off, one sewage cover near the entrance was over flowing tremendously with urine and roaches and some attendees just walked through it. Then it took one hour just to leave the VIP parking area because GNR allowed only two lanes to move on the far side of the track. Until that is, an officer came up behind us in his car with his lights, got out, and told the traffic control to let us go because he had an emergency to attend to.
