Speaking to journalists at the end of the Council of State meeting at the Palace of Cidadela de Cascais in Lisbon, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa again argued that we should avoid generalisations based on that criminal act carried out by an Afghan refugee, a widower with three young children.
According to the head of state, "what has been found so far seems to confirm" that this is "an individual case, that it was a psychological, personal and family case that occurs in many circumstances with many people".
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa mentioned that "family law specialists spoke of these situations, which are always very complicated of the exercise of parental responsabilities and all that lies behind it and the consequences it has on people's behaviour".
Asked if this case should be a warning for a better monitoring of refugees in Portugal, the President of the Republic replied: "This monitoring could not be more attentive here. Even if there have been problems, it is precisely because we have been very careful".
There is no excuse for what he did.
