According to data from the National Statistics Institute (INE), the average price per night in Lisbon continues to rise, reaching an average of 159.7 euros, recording “new historical highs” and being the highest price in the country. Higher prices were also the case in the North region, where the average price per occupied room was 119.1 euros.
Rising accommodation prices are a trend across the country. Considering the national total, the average price per occupied room amounted to 127.1 euros, growing 10.4% compared to the same period last year and 30.8% compared to the same period in 2019.
In the Algarve, the average income per occupied room reached 134.1 euros, but the most significant increases, in year-on-year terms, were recorded in the Azores where the average price per night reached 115.4 euros, up 14.7% and in Madeira where the stay amounted to 101.9 euros, rising 14.5%.
In addition to the increase in prices, the number of overnight stays also increased. Between January and September, 25.6 million guests and 68.1 million overnight stays were reported, representing growth of 13.6% and 10.9%, respectively. And compared to the same period in 2019, overnight stays increased by 8.2% (+6.5% for residents and +9.2% for non-residents), according to data from INE.
Among the main municipalities, the Algarve is the region where the biggest reductions in the number of overnight stays are noted, still below 2019.
In Vila Real de Santo António, one of the most affected, overnight stays are 16.8% below the pre-pandemic period, with Portuguese overnight stays being 17.3% below 2019 and among foreigners they were 16.4% below the pre-pandemic era. Also in Albufeira there is a 10% decrease compared to 2019 figures, of which 19.2% relates to the drop in overnight stays by Portuguese people and 7.2% by foreigners.
On the other hand, the rises in Vila Nova de Gaia stand out, where overnight stays grew by 34.4% (+23.8% for residents and +41.7% for non-residents), followed by Porto (+28. 7%; +18.6% for residents and +30.7% for non-residents), data released by INE also reveal.
