Data consulted by Lusa agency reveals that Portugal is the only member of EuroMOMO registered with the designation "very high excess", with a score of 12.14.
The numbers collected by EuroMOMO, from the Danish Institute for the Prevention of Contagious Diseases Statens Serum Institut, allow the comparison of the standard deviation of mortality in different countries (z-scores), measuring the excess deaths related to flu, Covid-19, differences in temperature and other threats to public health.
The measurement starts at base zero, with values between -2 and 2 falling within the normal range, while values above 4 are considered "moderate excess".
2 to 4 is considered "reduced excess"; from 7 to 10 "high excess"; from 10 to 15 "very high excess"; and more than 15 "extraordinarily high excess".
Portugal has been recording "a very high excess" of mortality since the last week of 2023.
On the map where the Portuguese case is identified, only Scotland and Greece stand out for appearing with "moderate excess". Spain and Germany are also highlighted, but with "reduced excess".
The EuroMOMO group of countries includes Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Hungary, Slovenia, Malta, Greece, Ukraine, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Sweden, England, Wales, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Cyprus and Israel.
Portugal is the country with the highest vaccination rate in the EU. The reason is not far to seek.

"Portugal stands out internationally as one of the countries with the highest percentage of vaccinated population: with data as of 11 October 2021 88% of the country's total population has received the first dose. Portugal also has the highest level of COVID-19 vaccination within the European Union as of the end of September 2021."

"Safe and effective, safe and effective, safe and effective, follow the science, the science, follow it, experts experts, safe and effective, gwak gwaaaak "
In case anyone's wondering, I'm imitating a parrot.
Anywho, our media, politicians, and experts and doctors are all very very baffled.

Portugal's inability to recruit & retain healthcare professionals is probably
at the root of these Stats. When I lived there in 2000/2001 they employed
many Russian Doctors. More recently they've tried to recruit from Columbia
- this all went horribly wrong as most left prior to contract completion. Throw
in, like much of Europe, an ageing population & ever hotter summers & you'll be getting closer to the truth than blaming Vaccines.

The majority of the people who died were over 65. These people were protected from death thanks to the covid-19 containment measures, particularly masks and hand washing. Most respiratory infections by other viruses were prevented with these measures. So, fewer people died of the flu and complications from the common cold during the winters when the containment measures were in force (2020/2021 and 2021/2022). Thanks to the same measures perhaps fewer viruses were circulating in the winter of 2022/2023. Lastly, our immune systems became "out of practice" from not having been exposed much to respiratory infections during the winters mentioned above. This winter (2023/2024), the common cold and flu viruses came back with a vengeance and found older people's immune systems completely out of shape to fight them, owing to not having had recent infections, and a few years older too. The people who are dying in excess this winter are the ones whose lives were spared by the use of masks and and hand hygiene. Were it not for those good practices, they would have died in one of the aforementioned previous winters.
