In the year under review, investment in R&D in the Algarve represented 0.47% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) generated in the region, which corresponds to 54 million euros, the highest value in recent years. It compares with 2019, in which investment in R&D was 41 million euros (0.41%, as a percentage of regional GDP), according to the report called “IPCTN22: Research and Development (R&D): main indicators by region”.

For José Apolinário, president of the Algarve Regional Coordination and Development Commission (CCDR), “It is necessary to reinforce investment in research and development in the region, especially in the transfer of knowledge to and with companies, bringing together the various entities, with a role key to the University of Algarve, the associated and collaborative laboratories, the areas of the sea, health and sustainable development, also reinforcing the role of the Mediterranean Diet, aiming to exceed 60 million euros in R&D investment by 2024”.
