The wealth of this region increased by 12% between 2021 and 2022 to close to 40 billion euros, accounting for 16.2% of the national GDP, according to a report by ECO.
This data is part of the annual Economic Bulletin that the municipality created last year and which the councillor responsible for the Economy intends to be “a basis for analysing decision-making by all those who have a relationship with the city of Porto: who live, work, invest and have companies and businesses here.”
Ricardo Valente considers that “the promotion of a culture of transparency and access to economic information is, therefore, crucial for the sustainable and equitable development of the city”. For the mayor, “the availability of clear and accessible economic data strengthens accountability, that is, accountability on the part of government officials.”
In this bulletin, the highlight is the 8.1% growth in FDI in AMP in 2023, a year in which it was around 1,020 million euros, above the 944 million euros recorded in 2022 and more than double the foreign investment registered in 2021 (651 million euros). These projects were responsible for creating twice as many jobs in 2023 (almost 6 thousand) compared to more than 3 thousand in 2022.
Data relating to company investment in AMP refers to 2022 with 4,286 million euros, having increased by 10% in one year. Regarding the number of companies, the data is the same as in the 2022 bulletin. The city had 47,307 companies in 2021, 2,247 more than in 2020.
AMP's wealth increased by 12.3% between 2021 and 2022 to 39,179 million euros, which represents 16.2% of the national GDP.
Also noteworthy is the tourism sector which, in 2023, recorded a 22.5% growth in the number of guests (2.8 million people). The number of accommodation establishments also rose by 13.9%, to 443, which totalled revenues of almost 435 million, an increase of 31.1% compared to the previous year.
The real estate market performed less favourably in 2023, with 5,718 homes sold (-18% than in 2022). The total value of houses sold reaches 1.8 billion euros in a city which has increased the number of inhabitants by 6.1% in the last decade.
