The success of this initiative has prompted discussions with the municipalities of Alcanena and Alcobaça to expand the incubation facilities, signaling the region’s commitment to fostering entrepreneurial growth.

Recently, Leiria was recognized as the fifth largest innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem in Portugal, according to the “Global Startup Ecosystem Index 2024” by StartupBlink. This remarkable achievement underscores the city’s rising prominence on the global stage, with Leiria climbing 33 positions to secure the 606th spot worldwide.


A Thriving Ecosystem Rooted in Innovation

The vibrant entrepreneurial environment in Leiria can be attributed to a robust culture of innovation and a collaborative spirit among various sectors. Vítor Ferreira, CEO and co-founder of Startup Leiria, emphasized the importance of this network when discussing the city’s recent rise in the global rankings. He pointed out the crucial role played by the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria (IPLeiria) in generating knowledge, facilitating spin-offs, and fostering collaboration. Additionally, entities such as the Leiria City Council, NERLEI (the Business Association of the Leiria Region), and companies like Void, Xgeeks, and Incentea have been instrumental in supporting and nurturing startups.

“Leiria is currently undergoing a transformation, blending its rich industrial heritage—molds, plastics, glass, product development, and agro-industry—with knowledge-intensive companies,” Ferreira remarked. He highlighted Bhout, one of the incubated companies, as a prime example of this synergy. Bhout combines artificial intelligence, computer vision, and advanced sensors with locally sourced materials like vegan leather, plastics, foams, and metal structures to create innovative products. This approach not only drives business success but also adds value to the regional economy.
