According to the “Mortality Tables in Portugal”, for the three-year period 2021-2023, life expectancy was calculated at 78.37 years for men and 83.67 years for women, up 0.32 and 0.15 years, respectively, compared to the period 2020-2022.

In the North region, life expectancy at birth was estimated at 81.82 years, but the highest figure was recorded in the Cávado sub-region, “the only region in which it exceeded 82 years (82.62 years)”.

Eight sub-regions, all included in the North and Centre regions, exceeded the national figure of 81.17 years. In addition to Cávado, Ave, the Porto Metropolitan Area, the Leiria Region, the Coimbra Region, the Aveiro Region, Alto Minho and Viseu Dão Lafões.

The lowest figures were in the Autonomous Regions of Madeira and the Azores, both for the total population (79.07 and 78.19 years, respectively), and for men and women.

In Baixo Alentejo, life expectancy did not reach 79 years.

Life expectancy at age 65 also increased in the period 2021-2023 to 19.75 years, 18 for men and 21.11 for women, “which corresponds to an increase of 0.24 years for men and 0.13 years for women compared to 2020-2022”.

In this case, the highest value was recorded in the Centro region for the total population, 20.15 years, and for women (21.48).

In 16 sub-regions, citizens aged 65 could expect to live longer than the 19.75 calculated for the whole country, with Cávado and Ave recording the highest values, 20.72 and 20.45 years, respectively.

“The lowest value, below 18 years, was recorded in the Autonomous Region of the Azores (17.70 years)”, the INE report states.
