Periodontitis: what is it?

Periodontitis is a serious inflammatory disease that affects the gums and the tissues that support the teeth. It occurs when gingivitis (initial inflammation of the gums) is left untreated and worsens, leading to the destruction of the bone and ligaments that support the teeth.

This condition can cause receding gums, tooth mobility and, in more advanced cases, tooth loss. In addition, periodontitis can be associated with other health problems, such as cardiovascular disease. Its prevention and treatment involve rigorous oral hygiene and regular visits to the dentist.

Periodontitis has some symptoms such as Main symptoms of periodontitis:

- Bleeding gums;

- Swollen, red or sensitive gums;

- Gum recession (gums pulling away from the teeth, exposing the roots);

- Persistent bad breath (halitosis);

- Mobility of the teeth;

- Pain when chewing or tooth sensitivity;

Did you know there is prevention?

Prevention of periodontitis is based on good oral hygiene: brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing and regular visits to the dentist. This helps to remove bacterial plaque, the main cause of the disease.

If there are already signs of periodontitis, treatment can include professional cleanings and, in more serious cases, procedures such as periodontal surgery. Ongoing maintenance after treatment is essential to prevent recurrence and ensure the long-term health of the gums and teeth.
