In addition to investigating the death of the 43-year-old man shot in the early hours of Monday by the PSP in Cova da Moura, having made the agent a defendant and seized his service weapon, the PJ is also investigating the disturbances that began on Monday night in the Zambujal neighbourhood and spread on Tuesday to other locations in the municipalities of Oeiras, Sintra, Amadora, Lisbon, Odivelas, Loures, Cascais, Almada and Seixal.

The source said that the PJ is investigating the disturbances because they are a public crime, considering that two Carris buses were set on fire, as well as cars and various urban furniture, such as trash cans.

Since Monday night, contempt was recorded in Zambujal and, on Tuesday, in neighbourhoods in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, where two buses, cars and trash cans were burned, and three people were arrested. Two police officers received hospital treatment due to stone throwing and two passengers on the burned buses suffered minor stab wounds.

These incidents occurred after Odair Moniz, 43 years old and resident of Bairro do Zambujal, was fatally shot by a PSP agent in the early hours of Monday, in Bairro da Cova da Moura, in the same municipality, and died shortly afterwards in the São Francisco Xavier Hospital, in Lisbon.

According to the PSP, the man “ran away” in a car after seeing a police vehicle and “went into” Cova da Moura, where, when approached by the agents, “he resisted arrest and tried to attack them with the use of a bladed weapon.”

The SOS Racismo association and the Vida Justa movement contested the police version and demanded a “serious and impartial” investigation to determine “all responsibilities”, considering that “a culture of impunity” in the police is at stake.

The General Inspectorate of Internal Administration opened an urgent investigation and the PSP also announced an internal investigation.

According to the PSP, the two agents are now on administrative duty and receiving psychological support.
