Even though the number of units produced decreased, Portugal continued to be the “champion” of the European Union (EU) in the manufacture of bicycles.

According to data released by Eurostat, 1.8 million bicycles were produced nationally in 2023, out of a total of 9.7 million bicycles manufactured in the community bloc.

Portugal was responsible for around 18.6% of total bicycle production in the EU. Romania (1.5 million), Italy (1.2 million) and Poland (0.8 million) are also among the biggest producers, according to the statistical office.

However, compared to 2022, bicycle production in Portugal fell 16.6%, with 358,390 fewer of these two-wheeled vehicles. At the EU level, it represents the third largest drop in the number of units produced, behind only Romania (-1,038,392) and Italy (-747,380), with annual decreases of 40.7% and 39.4%, respectively.

In the 27 Member States as a whole, bicycle production fell by 24% compared to 2022. The 9.7 million units also represent a 16% drop in the last decade, from 2013 to 2023.
