In the city of Portimão, two ecological islands were installed on Rua da Pedra and Rua do Luar, both prepared for the five waste streams: undifferentiated, paper and cardboard, plastic and metal, glass and organics. With regard to containers for organic waste, they will be activated during the 1st quarter of 2025, after the activation of the new collection circuit.

In the parish of Mexilhoeira Grande, the new islands installed in Praceta da Alfarrobeira and Praceta do Rosmaninho have containers for unsorted and recyclable waste (plastic and metal, paper and cardboard, and glass). Given that this is a rural area, EMARP intends to promote community composting, encouraging the treatment of organic waste directly at the source.

The procedure also includes reinforcing existing ecological islands through the installation of 80 new containers for recyclable waste in order to increase the disposal capacity of these waste streams. 60 undifferentiated waste tanks were also converted for the disposal of organic waste, in order to facilitate physical accessibility for the selective collection of food waste.

The adaptation of these points was financed by the Environmental Fund, within the scope of a technical and financial collaboration protocol signed with AMAL – Comunidade Intermunicipal do Algarve.
