The Portimão circuit hosted the Portuguese Grand Prix in 2020 and 2021, but there is bad news: Portuguese fans will be unlikely to watch Formula 1 live at home again in the coming years.
Speaking to Lusa, the president of the International Automobile Federation (FIA) dashed the aspirations of those who would like to have F1 back on national soil.
"Portugal is an excellent place, it already has other championships. In Formula 1 there is a limited number of places," began Mohammed ben Sulayem.
"We discussed the regulations side and the commercial side. I always try to balance the sporting side with the commercial side. I think F1 should never leave Europe because it was in Europe where it started and that's where the innovation still is. But that doesn't stop us from going to other regions”.
This is a disgrace.
F1 is chasing short term cash from every sheik with an oil well at the expense of the countries that built the sport. France and Germany are stuck scrambling for races, Portugal is shut out entirely, and countries like England and Belgium are held for ransom at every contract.
Five years from now, when the buzz from Drive to Survive wears off, this sport will be in trouble. European fans will have moved on.

I’m personally not surprised. Having been to F1 and MotoGp at the Portimao circuit the organisation is terrible. Toilets disgusting, parking awful having some areas to be accessed by single dirt tracks. Not something that’s acceptable. The circuit is absolutely fabulous with great views but the whole experience has been spoilt for me by bad organisation and don’t get me started on the announcements heard around the track e.g no commentary, music playing over commentary, only know race has started because the noise and only know the race has finished because the marshals walk to side of the track. So hope the circuit organisers get things sorted to the standards expected so we can see fabulous world class racing back at the Portimao circuit.
