Speaking to Lusa News Agency one of the protest’s organisers, Paulo Costa, of the Migrants United group, said the action is being staged to demand an improvement to services at the consulate. Among the main bones of contention is the fact that getting an appointment to renew necessary ID documents can entail a two-month wait.
Reports this week claimed that even on the day of an appointment, visitors can wait a number of hours longer than the time indicated, and the general working day does not seem to be long enough to attend to all of the people with a scheduled appointment.
“The problem has been ongoing for a long time, but in the past two years alone, some 100,000 Portuguese have arrived [in the UK] and only now are they faced with the situation”, Costa said.
In recent years both the Portuguese government and politicians have made mention of the “small team” of 14 employees that work at the consulate, but blamed a heightened lack of resources on a growing number of users.
Figures in the public domain suggest the consulate sees a daily average of 30 people and carries out a monthly average of 4,000 consular acts.
At the end of last month, the shortage of resources at the consulate was thrust to the fore when the absence of four employees who were off sick caused scenes of chaos and police had to be called in to restore order.
Unnamed consular sources reportedly told Lusa such scenes are regular occurrences, as are requests for the complaints book.
Addressing the rising number of complaints, Paulo Costa said he believes the “community’s emotional state” justifies the organisation of a protest, which in his opinion should also serve to put pressure on politicians at a time when there are fewer than eight months to go until the next general elections.
“We want people to come out and get the authorities’ attention to try and get things moving”, he explained.
The staging of the protest on 28 February, in the afternoon, when the consulate is closed, is intended to attract Portuguese citizens who work during the week as well as people who live outside of the capital.
The organisers are also aiming to gather the greatest number possible of signatures on an open letter that they intend to hand over at a later date to the Consul General Joana Gaspar.
Commenting on the London-centred community website AllinLondon, user reviews of the Portuguese Consulate range from the highly impressed to the downright bewildered.
While one reviewer described the service as “amazing” and praise-worthy, many others had less glowing comments to leave.
One Portuguese national from London described the assistance he received at the Consulate as “ridiculous and unbelievable”; another user identified as Isa from Cambridge said: “As a Portuguese citizen, I am really ashamed of such a poor service! Very unhelpful website.”
A reviewer from Bristol compared a trip to the Portuguese Consulate General in London to a “trip to hell”, explaining: “The staff are rude, impolite, lack a sense of humour, have no sense of time and efficiency and lack courtesy.”
Meanwhile, in related news, it has emerged that some of the employees at the Consulate General have asked the British government for welfare as they claim their salaries are too low to survive in London.
One employee, who spoke to Lusa on the condition of anonymity, said their application for social support last year was “automatically accepted” because the British authorities are aware of their struggles and was granted a rent subsidy.
The employee complained that a wage of around £1,000 a month is not enough to survive after paying for the rent of a one-bedroom flat that is shared with a friend, coupled with other living costs such as transport and food.
“It is extremely low for the amount of work we do and the responsibility we have. We see at least 30 people a day and we take care of important documents and information. It’s embarrassing”, the employee said, and stressed it is a situation that has been ongoing for a number of years.
A report in Diário de Notícias on Wednesday this week claims that the number of Portuguese-speaking nationals assisted at a community centre set up in London has more than doubled since 2013. Last year the Portuguese Community Centre saw five hundred people.
The centre was originally set up in 2012 to provide support to Portuguese emigrants in London, but rapidly expanded to help all Portuguese-speaking nationals due to a growing demand that apparently shows no signs of slowing down.
The Portugal News approached the office of the State Secretary for Communities and the Consulate-General in London for comment earlier in the week, but none had been received by the time of going to press.

If they don't like the service why don't they go back to Portugal

Seriouly? No one is forcing these immigrants to stay in London. How many of these complainers have and use a smartphone? How many are living out on the street? Tell these bleeding hearts to go back whence they came, don't like your job, then find another.

I doubt their wage Is 1000 a Month.Anyway It fits the quality of their work. The state of the consulate Is appalling.

Dear Derek
Rest assured that the complaint isn't against the British authoriries but the Portuguese consular representation in London which has consitently denigrated over the last few years.
The story highlights the plight of consular workers who due to their alledgedly low wages seeks social security supplements fron the UK government. As a Protuguese citizen and taxpayer in the UK i find this situation abhorrent especially if as I suspect the people concerned do not pay income tax or NI inthe UK, something I have yet to fully establish.

I been living in the UK for the past 16 years and what I have to say is that the Portuguese Consulate in London neads to start doing it's job and the people affected has all the right to protest and defend there rights .in relation to some of the comments here, I can say it has been a rise in racism and descrimination agains people from origins out side England ,a rise in ignorance fueled by the media, that fail to educate the people properly ,feeding them hate and incomplete massaged news.

Yeah that sounds real smart telling people who have to visit a consulate in a foreign country to go home..you racist I studied in your school system and many people need to visit a consulate and expect proper service. Like the Queen when she travels abroad to her commonwealth countries bills all of her expense and clothing to the consulate in that country, I am sure there is always enough staff to attend to her needs and bills with all the taxes she pays and all.

Derek you missed the point! On the matter of the article generally speaking most Portuguese Public Servants are not qualified for their jobs and were only appointed due to family or friends influence rather than merit. As the saying goes it is not what you know it is who you know!. Portuguese Consulates all over the world are a total nightmare with incompetent staff and even more incompetent Consular General. It is appalling the services that they provide. All the people who required services from the Consulate must complain. I agree if these workers are not happy with their salary I suggest they come back to Portugal.
By G. Lopes from Porto on 24 Feb 2015, 18:39
Know of many people who have complained about the service received at the embassy. Regarding the subsidy, surely the Portuguese government should be the ones to approach for a subsidy not the UK government?

I wrote to several media places to see if any could reach the authorities to whom it may concern about the apoling work the staff at the Portuguese Consulate in London has been doing for so many years. I have dealt with them on and off for the last twenty odd years and it has never changed, it actually has gone from bad to horrible, if this is a strong enough word.
And they are complaining that their salary is low ? sorry but they are been paid for a lot more than they deserve. It does not matter what one needs from them, the waiting, the rudness, the lack of professionalism and the image they create and give of our country is just so awfully wrong. I doubt it will ever change. If they do not like their job, go back home and work there, then they will see what life is about, but please do not give such a bad name and impressing of Portugal.
By Olga Hay from Other on 25 Feb 2015, 14:09
The Services are worse then any third world country, you probably get better services in the Zimbabwe Consulate.
A lack of professionalism. And the staff there should all be fired for they lack of respect, workmanship and rudeness.
It is a shame, that its easier to deal with a third world consulate then Portugal Consulate in London. They have no shame of their bad services and rudeness. What is the Government in Portugal doing about it ?

This confirms the state of the Portuguese government and civil service , in a mess , and it is the same abroad .

We attended the Consulate in London today and nothing has changed. We had to go to the first floor and the women working there was the rudest most obnoxious person and started shouting aggressively at my husband because he complained that we had been sent to the wrong section to wait for over an hour, their mistake not ours. They are incompetent, rude and primitive to say the least and really give us the Portuguese people a bad name.
By M Rodrigues from UK on 03 Jan 2018, 21:44
I am sorry but would say that all the staff working at the Portugal consulate are idiots and assholes.
They do not respect human values and are one of the rudest of all.
I was informed to come to the consulate to collect the passorts which were submitted on 23rd April.
My friends are flying tomorrow and because of their system problems they could not issue the visa.
I was asked to come before 4.30 pm but i reached there 30 mins before time and i was denied entry.
After lot of convince ,went inside but they denied to handover the passports because i did not have the receipts.
My friends had applied in Manchester and had paid £12-315 extra for the post but were called to collect the passport from LOndon office.
When i requested them to give the passports ,they called the security gurads and i was literally man handled and pushed outside the consulate and the security guard literally pushed the door on me and my leg was stuck between the doors.
They are so inhuman and idiots and do not deserve to stay in this country.
I am not sure where to complain ,but i want justice and will sure see to it that the security guard gets a lesson.
What goes around ..comes around.

This consulate is an embarrassment to the Portuguese nationality. My experience over the years has been awful and disappointing. I have had several trips to the consulate with an appointment booked 3 months in advance, to then get there for 8:00 and wait until 17:00 and get told I have to go home and re book as they are running out of time. the same day they told me to go outside whilst they have their lunch and need to close the doors to come back at 14:00. I had to travel to get to London and also had a day off work. No one was helpful and said I had to just leave and go online to get another appointment. I then attended again this year to register my marriage to then update my passport and cartao. we attended the consulate with an appointment and only when we arrived and did all the paperwork he told me it was just over £100 and it had to be in cash. we saw Isais Fidalgo who wrote down the amount we had to pay to come back another day or to pay via postal order, we had to leave with nothing sorted. I did the postal order ready for my next appointment to renew my cartao and also to register marriage. I waited all morning and Isais Fidalgo said the amount is wrong started shouted and being rude very intimidating. No one cared in the office but just stared. I told him this was the amount he told myself and my husband. he refused to let me speak and kept shouting. I asked him how much is it then?? he told me is was a few pence more than what was on the standing order! he then ran down to security and told them to get me out the building. no one did anything and I had to leave again with nothing done. He made me sign a document to say I am happy to cancel the forms we filled in and the registry of marriage. Now I am trying to get an appointment online as it says everyday from 16:00 to book online. for 2 weeks the website hasn't been working so it is impossible to get an appointment. no one has bothered to reply to my emails to let me know how I should get an appointment with their website not working. This is the worse experience I have ever had with customer service. and their excuse is the Portuguese government haven't got enough funds to pay them or pay more staff! if you are that miserable working for the Portuguese consulate maybe find another job! rather then sit there all day shouting at people with a very unfriend face. that goes to everyone in the consulate. I never wanted to change my nationality. but just to avoid going to this consulate I am doing everything to change. This is horrendous the way they treat people. the worse ever customer service. I will be going further with this complaint.

June, 22nd 2021.
Since yesterday that I have been trying to contact the Portuguese Consulate in London.
3 times I've been on the phone for over 30 minutes waiting for someone to answer, 1 yesterday, which I rang at 17:10 and after 30 minutes my phone call was cut off. for a service that is suppose to finish at 18:00, I found this very strange and frustrating.
This morning, I called twice and every time I was told by the automatic voice that my waiting estimated time would be 28 minutes (just like yesterday), I thought my phone call would be cut off, but 35 minutes later someone answered.
The first thing has I shared my details was that I'm not registered at the consulate, I asked why was that possible when I renewed my CC in Dec 2020? Secondly, although polite, the person on the phone couldn't answer my questions with certainty or without double checking, third, the background noise and loud voices near the person I was talking to on the phone was just too much, to the point that I had to repeat my details several times and confirm them several times. But the worst of all this is that, my passport next available appointment is for March 2022!!!!!!! How can this be?!!! At this time, where we as Portuguese citizens are more vulnerable to the uncertainties of Brexit and Covid, the Portuguese Consulate takes the approach and the inefficiency of a 3rd world country.
We live in a digital era, where mechanisms of protection are available that these things can be dealt with digitally. Portuguese institutions feast more on status that actually efficiency, and the Portuguese Consulate in London has been showing for many years that lacks the ability to honour the service Portuguese citizens living abroad so much need deserve.
